Seedlings with natural root architecture
"The mortality rate has gone down, because the Ellepot paper secures more natural root architecture and a better containment of humidity, which is important when the plants leave the nurseries."
Ellepot offers 360-degree air pruning for a healthier and more fibrous root system. By keeping the roots intact, you eliminate transplant shock and ensure better nutrient uptake. Plus, Ellepot makes planting 10-20% faster.
A change for the environment
Extreme weather and shifting seasons prompted Sappi's nursery to transform. The Ellepot propagation system offers benefits like an air-pruned root system and a stable plug for early handling. Unlike traditional plastic inserts, Ellepot uses degradable paper that stays on during planting.
Sappi's key benefit is moving plants out of the nursery two weeks earlier, reducing transit time and transplant shock. This leads to better plant ratings and lower mortality as plants establish more quickly and easily.
Apremavi's nursery is a technological hub due to its research, especially in the production of native species from the Atlantic Forest, and due to the Ellepot system, implemented in 2019.
Two of the biggest issues facing East African forestry today are the quality of wood, and the speed at which it grows. Plantech in Kenya, supported by Gatsby Africa, has shown that a few changes can have a profound impact on the quality, resilience, and commercial viability of planted forest.
